Cantilever Rack Buyer’s Guide

When you’re buying a cantilever rack, there are a few questions to need to ask yourself before choosing the right rack for your warehouse. First, what type of product are you storing?

Once you have determined the dimensions, weight, and amounts of the product loads being stored, you need to think how it will fit in your space.

How many loads will be stored per level?

To determine how many loads you can store per level, you need to know the dimensions of your warehouse or storage space. This includes height, width, and the amount of product you need to store.

Will your loads double stack?

You may also decide to double stack the racks for optimal storage space. This can be done only if you have the height available and the utilities necessary for loading and unloading products that are high up. Single-sided racks are the simplest form. These are racks where loads can be stored only on one side. Double-sided racks are for storing loads on both sides of the upright. All of Yankee Supply’s racks are customizable to your storage needs.

What is a cantilever rack?

It is a freestanding storage unit with horizontal load carrying arms extending outward from a vertical column. The absence of a vertical support on the outboard ends of the arms permits uninterrupted storage of long lengths of material.

What can be stored on these racks?

Cantilever racks are ideal for storing furniture, steel bars, pipe, tubing, lumber, and other long, heavy items.

How do I get the right size?

Cantilever racks are made up of three parts. The uprights, arms, and brace sets. All three of these components are customizable to fit your storage needs.

What are uprights?

Uprights consist of a vertical column and a horizontal base which is bolted to the column. A minimum of two uprights must be ordered to form a storage bay. Each edge of the column is punched vertically on 3” centers so it may be used as a single sided upright depending on the size of the base used. Holes are provided in the base of the uprights for the option to anchor the floor.

What are the arms for?

Cantilever arms are the heart of the rack system. Proper selection can make or break a successful storage plan. Straight arms are generally used for storing stable loads such as lumber, steel sheets, cartons and skids. Inclined arms are typically used for cylinder objects or loads that tend to roll forward. All arms can be adjusted on 3 in. centers up and down the upright. Arms are available in lengths to 60 in. in a variety of capacities. The hair pin keeper permits instant adjustability and is easily inserted and removed for adjustments of the arm height.

What are the dimensions of the straight arm?

Straight arms can measure up to 48 in. long and have a minimum pitch of 3/8 in. per foot to compensate for deflection. 54 in. and 60 in. arms have a minimum pitch of 5/8 in. per foot.

What are the dimensions of the inclined arm?

Inclined arms have a pitch of 20 degrees or approximately 4.36 in. per foot.

It’s always important to plan for your cantilever rack installation before buying new storage for your warehouse.
